NEUROLOGICAL

Hundreds of thousands of people across the UK live with neurological conditions. These disorders affecting the central and peripheral nervous systems include epilepsy, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Bell’s palsy, and ADHD, among others. Many neurological conditions are incurable and can greatly affect speech, movement, and emotional wellbeing. Conventional treatments, including medication and surgery, often come with serious risks and side effects. The NHS already prescribes cannabis-based treatments to some people with MS and epilepsy, and growing evidence suggests these treatments can enhance the quality of life for those with a variety of debilitating neurological disorders. CBD, a compound found in cannabis, has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may support brain cell health and function, helping to alleviate symptoms of neurological conditions. Additionally, cannabis may offer neuroprotective benefits, potentially guarding against nerve cell damage and degeneration. It has been reported to reduce muscle stiffness, tremors, and pain. Some patients have also experienced improved mental clarity, a lifted mood, and reduced anxiety when using CBD. 70% of individuals with epilepsy could live seizure-free lives with proper treatment. 1 in 5 people with MS have used cannabis to help manage their symptoms. 26% of Parkinson’s patients have reported using cannabis-based treatments.
