Exploring the Relationship Between Cannabis and Exercise

Cannabis is often associated with leisure activities like binge-watching Netflix and indulging in snacks. But is there a connection between cannabis and working out?

With the array of edible products available, offering a smoke-free alternative, some wonder if consuming cannabis can indeed enhance their workout experience. Opinions on this matter vary.

While we refrain from endorsing the use of cannabis in conjunction with exercise, a recent study by the University of Colorado revealed that 80% of frequent cannabis users incorporate it into their exercise routines.

But why might this be beneficial?

While a potent indica strain might not be conducive to lacing up your running shoes, a sativa strain could instill a “get up and go” attitude, motivating those who need an extra push to start moving. However, official health bodies are hesitant to make conclusive statements regarding cannabis’s efficacy as a workout supplement. They argue that further research is needed to ascertain the effectiveness of THC and CBD in boosting energy, enhancing workout performance, or aiding in muscle recovery.

Moreover, cannabis could serve as a reward system, incentivizing individuals to engage in physical activity. For instance, knowing there’s an edible waiting at home post-workout might provide ample motivation to hit the gym. Some also claim that consuming cannabis before engaging in a calming exercise like yoga can help maintain mental clarity and presence during the session.

Could cannabis topicals bridge the gap between cannabis and exercise?

One intriguing connection between cannabis and working out lies in the emergence of cannabis-infused topicals in the market. These topicals, designed for application near muscles and joints, may contain ingredients like eucalyptus, known for its muscle pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties. While the potential benefits of these products for post-workout recovery are promising, they await further validation.

However, it’s crucial to consider the risks involved.

Foremost, consuming cannabis before a workout and driving is illegal, unsafe, and strongly discouraged. If you choose to incorporate cannabis into your exercise routine, opt for walking, public transportation, or home workouts.

Cannabis products, particularly those high in THC, can induce anxiety, drowsiness, and impair concentration and reaction times. Such effects can compromise your workout performance and pose risks to your safety. It’s essential to familiarise yourself with a comprehensive list of effects.
